The Pathway supports learners who wish to follow a self-directed and personalized learning path. The option is also available to pursue a carefully curated core leadership curriculum that leads to a Canada School of Public Service Leadership Development Certificate upon completion.

The goal of the new Leadership Pathway is to empower and equip learners with the essential skills, knowledge, and mindsets required to excel as leaders at any stage of their careers.

What different types of learning products are offered through the new Leadership Pathway?

In keeping with recent survey data gathered from public servants on learner needs and preferences, the new Leadership Pathway (TRN4-PA1) provides a combination of virtual instructor-led courses, self-paced online courses, videos, job aids and podcasts.

Incorporating different perspectives and essential leadership learning, the Leadership Pathway allows learners to:

When is the expected launch date for the new Leadership Pathway?

The launch of the new Leadership Pathway (TRN4-PA1) is planned for the first quarter of fiscal year 2024-2025.

Why is the new Leadership Pathway being launched at that time?

The new Leadership Pathway (TRN-PA4) is intended to offer an attractive learning option for new supervisors, with the phasing out of the Supervisor Development Program: Virtual Edition (SDPv) by the end of this fiscal year, 2023-2024.

The new Leadership Pathway will support learners at all levels to successfully navigate and benefit from the carefully curated leadership curriculum at the Canada School of Public Service. Of note, learners can register to pursue a core leadership curriculum to obtain a Canada School of Public Service Leadership Development Certificate.

Compared to the current Supervisor Development Program: Virtual Edition (SDPv), the new Leadership Pathway (TRN4-PA1) includes a broader range of leadership topics, better reflects evolving workplace realities, addressees content gaps, and provides learners with more practical tools.

Who is eligible to pursue learning offered through the new Leadership Pathway?

The Leadership Pathway (TRN4-PA1) is open to all public servants at all levels, who are interested in developing as leaders according to their self-identified needs and at their own pace. The curriculum eligible for certification provides an attractive option for anyone aspiring to grow as a leader, including current supervisors and managers. Learners are encouraged to discuss their interest in leadership training with their managers and include this in their performance development plans.

Do learners need to be nominated or assigned to benefit from the new Leadership Pathway curriculum?

Nominations are not required for the new Leadership Pathway (TRN4-PA1). A learner may begin their leadership learning journey at any time. It is recommended that learners discuss their learning goals with their respective managers, particularly if they decide to pursue the Canada School of Public Service Leadership Development Certificate option.

What are the advantages of pursuing the option in the Leadership Pathway to earn a Canada School of Public Service Leadership Development Certificate?

Learners who complete a core curriculum to obtain certification will formally demonstrate their commitment to their leadership development, and their aspiration to pursue or excel in leadership positions.

What is the expected time commitment for completing the certification option of the new Leadership Pathway?

As a self-directed product, there is no set completion target for the new Leadership Pathway (TRN4-PA1). Learners will be able to access these learning products and personalize their learning at their preferred pace. The total learning in the certificate option is approximately 45 hours. The courses can be completed in any order.

Supplemental, non-required learning highlighted in the new Leadership Pathway is also accessible and can be tailored to suit self-identified needs and interests of learners.

Please note that learners who have already completed courses required for the certification option, will automatically receive credit and will not be required to retake those courses.

It is recommended that learners discuss their learning goals with their respective managers. It is also recommended that learners establish a schedule for training and allow themselves time between training topics for the opportunity to implement what they are learning. This will help learners to consolidate their learning over the longer-term.

How will the new Leadership Pathway remain current and relevant?

The curriculum choices available in the new Learning Pathway (TRN4-PA1) were carefully curated to provide the richest possible learning experience for public servants pursuing individualized and self-directed leadership development. An appropriate mix of learning products were selected to provide learners with a comprehensive exposure to priority learning topics.

As new learning products are developed by the Canada School of Public Service or licensed from approved third-party learning product vendors, they will be considered for eventual inclusion in the Leadership Pathway. Some learning products will be added, and some may be replaced. Learners pursuing the certification option will retain credit for courses already taken.

Learners’ feedback on the new Leadership Pathway will also contribute to ongoing improvements to this product.
