Frequently asked questions about the Manager Development Program: Virtual Edition

Archiving and Redesigning the Manager Development Program: Virtual Edition

Why is the current Manager Development Program: Virtual Edition (MDPv) being archived and redesigned?

The Manager Development Program: Virtual Edition (MDPv) is benefitting from significant content and design updates to address evolving workplace realities, content gaps, and to add practical tools.

What is the redesigned Manager Development Program?

The redesigned Manager Development Program (LPL146) is a new eight-week cohort-based virtual classroom program designed for managers within the first 12 months of their appointment. Launching in October 2024, participants will register for one program and will then be scheduled into their eight days of cohort-based learning (one day per week over 8 weeks). The Program features refreshed content reflecting evolving workplace and Public Service realities, and a greater diversity of learning products.

When will the current Manager Development Program: Virtual Edition (MDPv) be archived?

Participants who are already enrolled in this program and who have completed Orientation and Self-Discovery for Managers (LPL134) will have until March 31, 2025, to complete the remaining courses that are part of this program before they are archived and removed from the School’s learning platform. At that time, learners will no longer have access to the course materials related to the archived program. Please note that these courses from the MDPv will remain in the CSPS catalogue: Leading with Courage Through Challenging Times (LPL138); Coaching for Effective leadership (TRN402); Leading Diversity (INC110); and Introduction to Negotiation (TRN140).

Participants will no longer be able to register for the current program effective April 1, 2024.

How will the archive process impact certifications earned in the current Manager Development Program: Virtual Edition (MDPv)?

Certifications obtained before the archival of MDPv are not impacted and remain valid. Participants in the redesigned program can earn a certification upon completion.

How will the transition affect MDPv courses already in progress?

All learners who have completed Orientation and Self-Discovery for Managers (LPL134) before March 31, 2024, will be able to complete the remaining courses that are part of the current MDPv program until March 31, 2025.

Will more course offerings be made available to allow current participants to finish the MDPv program?

The Canada School of Public Service has planned course offerings to ensure all current participants can successfully complete the program by March 31, 2025.

If a learner was previously nominated for but unable to complete the Manager Development Program: Virtual Edition (MDPv) during the remaining eligibility period, can they still complete the redesigned Manager Development Program (LPL146)?

Registered learners have until March 31, 2025, to complete the current MDPv program. Should completion not be achieved by this date, learners will need to be re-nominated by their departmental learning coordinator to enroll in the redesigned Manager Development Program (LPL146), and then start from the beginning.

Will progress in the current Manager Development Program: Virtual Edition (MDPv) program be transferred to the redesigned program?

The Manager Development Program will be significantly redesigned. As such, progress cannot be transferred between the current and redesigned programs.

Participation in the redesigned Manager Development Program (LPL146) will continue to require nomination by departmental learning coordinators.

What is the expected launch date for the redesigned Manager Development Program (LPL146)?

The launch of the redesigned Manager Development Program (LPL146) is planned for the third quarter of fiscal year 2024-2025.

What improvements can we expect in the redesigned Manager Development Program (LPL146)?

The redesigned Manager Development Program (LPL146) is an eight-week cohort-based virtual classroom program designed for managers within the first twelve months of their appointment. It features refreshed content reflecting evolving workplace and Public Service realities, and a greater diversity of learning products.

  • This cohort-based environment will support continuity and allow learners to share their perspectives and experiences throughout the learning journey.
  • Understanding that participants are busy in their roles, all program requirements can be met during class time – there will be no homework.
  • Learners simply register for one program in the redesigned Manager Development Program (LPL146) instead of individual courses. Registration will open at least 6 weeks before the beginning of the first cohort offering in October. Learners must first be nominated by their departmental learning coordinators in order to register.
  • Now with a shorter program length, completion rates should be higher compared to the current Manager Development Program: Virtual Edition (MDPv).
How many sessions can a registered learner miss before needing to restart the redesigned Manager Development Program?

To remain in the program in good standing, a registered learner is allowed to be absent for only one session during the 8-week cohort-based program.

Are there any prerequisites for the redesigned Manager Development Program (LPL146)?

There are no prerequisites for the redesigned program. The program has been planned so that all program requirements can be met during class without any advance work. The redesigned Manager Development Program (LPL146) will continue to require nomination by departmental learning coordinators.

Who is eligible for the redesigned Manager Development Program (LPL146)?

The redesigned Manager Development Program (LPL146) is intended for newly appointed managers within the first twelve months of their appointment. Respective departments’ learning coordinators will be responsible to nominate and assign eligible candidates to this program. Learning coordinators are encouraged to consider equity, diversity, and inclusion objectives when determining nominations to the program.
